John Laneville

For as long as I can remember, I have had an appreciation for art, design, and creative expression in general– both mine and the works of others. From the time I was a child, the most enjoyable and fulfilling part of my life has been when I have been creating and consuming art and design. In the following words my goal is to explain why I feel should be accepted into the Graphic Design Program at USA to further my education of art and design, as well as what I intend to accomplish with my degree once I have completed the program. I feel that I would be a valuable addition to the program for multiple reasons. As expected of Graphic Designers, I am used to wearing many hats. I’ve played the role of student, volunteer, employee, owner/operator and many others, all at the same time. Throughout grade school and college, I’ve been successful in maintaining a GPA of above 3.0 while partially supporting myself financially and pursuing creative endeavors. As employee, I’ve learned the value of collaboration and how working with a team can open your eyes to different perspectives. As volunteer and owner/ operator, I’ve aimed to use my skills and knowledge to help those in need and provide true value in my services. I’ve always enjoyed being a problem solver and critical thinker, and I hope to further improve upon these aspects if I am accepted into the Graphic Design program. Upon graduation, I hope to never stop learning. My immediate goal once completing the program would be to gain employment at a design firm or other creative business. I intend to continue sharpening my skills as a designer and gain new perspectives through collaboration with other designers. Being raised by a small business owner, I also wish to follow in my mother’s footsteps and pursue my own entrepreneurial endeavors as a freelance designer. My ultimate goal is to be able to use my creativity and knowledge of art and design to help other businesses and people who want to improve society as a whole. In conclusion, I hope to make a valuable addition to the Graphic Design program at USA with my work ethic, problem solving, and creativity. If accepted I hope to use what I’ve gained as a stepping stone to continue learning and collaborating with other designers, while also using those skills to do my part in making the world a better place.
